Role prompting
also called persona prompting
Telling the AI who to be. "Act as a patient teacher" changes its voice, though it does not make it any smarter.
Giving a model a role or persona in the prompt to steer its tone, focus and style of answer.
A line in the prompt that assigns the model a persona or job. It shifts tone, vocabulary and focus because the model continues text in the style of that role, but it adds no knowledge or skill the model did not already have.
Real-life example
You ask a model to explain a contract clause and get a stiff answer. You add "you are a friendly lawyer explaining this to a first-time renter", and the tone changes and the explanation gets simpler. The legal knowledge was the same as before. Only the delivery changed.
Where the analogy breaks
-
A role does not add expertise. Calling the model an expert changes the voice more than the facts it can recall.
-
Gains in factual accuracy are often small. Use roles to set tone and audience, and use sources and checks for correctness.
-
A role is not a safety measure. It can be overridden by later text, so do not rely on it to keep the model in bounds.
